The Stigma Of Being Sane

I hope people think you’re weird. Talk about you when you’re not around. And chastise you for not acting more “normal.” I say that because I think most people are crazy. Really...

I don’t mean that most of them are so insane that they are likely to pull a Hannibal Lector and start eating their neighbors, or that they need to be locked in a padded cell to protect themselves. But they are crazy nevertheless.

Because co-dependency is mental illness. So is narcissism. And addiction, and a host of other common traits in the general population.

Most people spend their life as mindless drones in the tribe, incapable of critical thinking or rational thought.

They stumble through life, aimlessly drifting, reacting to one stimulus after another, with no conscious plan for happiness, fulfillment or significance.

But that’s not you...

Couldn’t be, or you wouldn’t even be in this program. Because our little “school for the real world” is dedicated to the challenge, growth, and commitment of pursuing a life of adventure.

And when you do that, changes start to take place. Banal gossip no longer interests you. Vapid television sitcoms can’t be tolerated. Alcohol and drugs lose their allure.

And suddenly you have a hard time conversing with stupid people. Or as the country song says, “I sobered up, and I got to thinking, you ain't much fun since I quit drinking.”

You start to realize something. You don’t fit in anymore.

And if you want to fit in, you have to wear flip-flops on airplanes, giggle along with laugh tracks, talk on your cell phone in the theatre, chew with your mouth open, dress in beach clothes for church, go to Austin Power movies, get your fashion sense from Joan Rivers, your culinary knowledge from Mr. Food, and your music appreciation from a drum machine.

On the plane over here, they were playing a show called “Wolf Blitzer Reports.” The show is from CNN, which last time I checked, stood for Cable News Network.

I’m not sure exactly what news Wolf was reporting on, because his guest was the mini me guy from the Powers movies.

So what’s it all add up to?

Simply put, most people have very meaningless lives. And because they are in the grips of so many various mental afflictions, and have such low self-esteem, it stays that way.

And they are very threatened by people who are healthy, happy and living a life of prosperity. And rather than strive for the life you’re moving toward, they work to hold you back.

Which leads to a very real danger...

Humans are social animals. We like to spend our life with a mate, and we frequently travel in packs. These instincts can cause us to do things to fit in with the pack. And what does that mean?

Staying sick, broke and stupid. Or pretending that you are. (Have you ever downplayed a raise you got, or the amount of money you’re worth, or a promotion you got, because you were afraid you would offend the person you were with.)

You can subconsciously stop growing as a person, because of the stress it puts on a relationship you have with someone who isn’t growing.

You can keep your candle burning low, because you are surrounded by people in the dark.

And that is one of the greatest tragedies of human existence.
